The Panamanian Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematics (FUNDAPROMAT) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) welcome you to join our Eighteenth Math Webinar in English, which will take place on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022 at 4 pm Panama time, 5 pm EDT. This Webinar is free and open to the general public, which means that kids and adults of all ages are welcome to attend.
In this Eighteenth Math Webinar in English, our invited speaker Yana Mohanty, Founder and CEO at Imathgination LLC, will be presenting on “Dickens, Airplane Wings, and Other Stops in the Journey of a Flexagon.” The Jacob’s Ladder is an ancient folk toy encountered in old paintings, as well as in a short story by Charles Dickens. The “magic wallet” is a magic trick involving mysterious movement of bills. A tri-tetraflexagon is a form-shifting object that can be easily made out of paper and tape. This virtual event will explore the mechanism common to all of these objects, including its application to modern airplane wing design. It should be noted that there will be no simultaneous translation into Spanish provided during this virtual event.
